Genre is a style or type of film. It usually follows a particular style.

Genre

Trailer 1

Whiplash (2014)

Genre: Drama

-Starts off with simple slow paced classical music, explaining the character and what he does

-The pace shows that it's very peaceful.

-The music accompanies the words on the screen.

-It all goes fine until suddenly one of the character loses his temper and the music stops. To show suspense and change of pace.

-The music gets more eerie as it progresses, the scenes are clearly dramatic and you can see the character suffering.

-Close ups really show the power of both characters- one is weak and one is in power

-Towards the end of the trailer, the beat of the drums start slowly and progresses to be louder and more fast paced, as its a movie about music and how the student suffers psychological damage from his teacher, the use of drums is very useful.

-The drums gradually becoming louder leaves the audience growing with suspense as it's becoming louder and louder with the scenes in the background, as you can see what is happening and him struggling through his school year being abused, and not wanting to give up, because he wants to be the best. Also each scene changes as the beat stops and starts again, following words on the screen showing the reviews of the movie.

-It ends with the film name and a dramatic sound at the end showing how the genre is 'Drama'

-The fact that the character is being abusing towards the other one, makes the audience ask why, and also makes us sympathize with the character and would want to see what happens next as everyone would be curious

-The colour grading seems to be mostly yellow, this is makes the audience seem like its going to be happy but its actually intense, it shows intensity

Trailer 2

Alien (1979)

Sci-fi / Thriller

-The trailer almost no dialogue at all, which makes it a good trailer as you want to know more about the movie therefore you would want to go and watch it

-It starts off with an intro of the title 'Alien' and then it moves on to a scene in space to show the audience that it is set in space, therefore its a sci-fi movie.

-The use of fast paced clips edited in non-chronological order shows us how suspenseful the film is going to be.

There is no music or change or music as it is all eerie and fast paced as it suggests that the movie is always suspenseful and the audience is never really safe. Until towards the last few seconds where it unexpectedly brings out an even more eerie and scary vibe and jump scares the audience

-There is also a lot of use of heartbeat to again emphasize the thriller of it and making the audience sympathize with the characters as they are in danger.

-The end shows a sentence 'In space no one can hear you scream' which makes the scary element of it, making it seem very suspenseful and scary.

-The clips don't show much on what is going on in the film, just that they are in space and that there is something there out to get them as there are really and horrendous scenes. But the audience does know because of the title of the movie

-The fact that it doesn't show consistent scenes and it makes the trailer look messy, its so that the audience would want to watch it, and understand what its about.

-Many of the scenes in the trailer are disturbing so audiences who like horror infused films, they would enjoy it from the trailer

Trailer 3

Django Unchained (2012)

Action

-The setting and the first scene tells you where and when the movie is set, this shows the audience what the genre and type of movie is, which is western/action movie.

-The fact that it is a Tarantino film makes the audience already know that it's going to be bloody and violent as he is a well known director

-2 other well known actors are also on this, such as Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio, this catches some of the audience's attention

-It has a comedic yet dramatic sense to it, as the trailer incorporates a lot of jokes in the film

-The music tells us that there is a lot of action and fast paced scenes, as its set in the western olden times genre

-It doesn't give too much away, but at the same time we can kind of get what the movie is briefly about

-The pauses of music when a character speaks an important line or a funny line is important as its so the audience processes what the character just said and so that they can pick up and will want to watch the film.

-The trailer contains a lot of words on screen to show the well known actors as its so people will want to watch it, because they will recognize and like the actors and director

-It also has a lot of red in the trailer, this is to show that it's going to be bloody and violent, as its a Tarantino film, its expected but also because its a Western film, and guns are the main priority in this film, we should be able to expect more blood than most action films.

-The font of the film itself, is very different and its rough and not smooth around the edges making it look like it just came out of dirt or sand which is where the film is set, making it appropriate for the content.

-The comedic scenes overpower the fact that this film is really violent

Planning & Ideas

Idea 1 - Comedy:

Superhero with odd superpowers

A useless superhero who helps people with everyday errands finally learns a hidden power

Idea 2 - Drama:

Girl learns her best friend is an imaginary friend

A girl and her only friend do everything together, her friend gets her in trouble, and she soon finds out that her friend is in fact imaginary

I decided to go with my first idea which is a comedy style film based on a superhero who is not good at being a superhero.

In the end he learns from his mistakes and finally manages to make things right.

Synopsis:

Young man has always dreamed of being a superhero, main superhero in the city dies, he then decides to take over and tries to save the city. After failing, he finally succeeds.

- He's always wanted to be a superhero

- Main superhero dies

- He decides to make a costume and a mask

- He waits for crime

- He tries to do things and fails

- He then does an actual dangerous crime and learns a new power

- He then succeeds

Scene 1:

Him looking through comic books (shot 1 close up, extreme close up)

Scene 2:

Announcement on tv or radio about superhero dying (medium shot of him looking to a poster)

Scene 3:

Him making a superhero costume or drawing a superhero costume and mask (close up, medium shot, over the shoulder)

Scene 4:

He waits for crime to happen (panning shot of him walking around in a costume and people looking at him weirdly) (music then goes from heroic to no music to music again) (long shot) of him sitting down waiting for crime to happen)

'what are you doing?' 'waiting for crime to happen' 'how's that going' 'boring'

Scene 5:

Tries to do things normal things, like saving a cat from a tree and the cat ending up getting run over by a car and him freaking out and the kid freaking out (medium shot, panning shot, close up)

Scene 6:

He discovers he has super strength and ends up fighting and winning. (low angle) of him punching his friend and (music ends because its a funny scene) 'damn it dude' 'Sick' they both cheer

Scene 7:

random scenes of him helping people and crimes happening (long shot, close up, high angle)

Post Production

Loads of plans were changed. The original footage was too dark and some scenes didn't make sense so I decided to reshoot. It was a good idea because after I reshot, everything looked better, and the lighting looked much better. The sound is also better and I'm going to edit the music is so it adds to the genre of the film

confronting the villain/criminal

running after criminal

For the editing, I made sure to have all the right sounds on the right place so the scene would make sense and it would be smooth. I also tried to make the cuts all smooth so it would work well together, I left some gaps in between some scenes as I thought it would make a better effect of suspense and dramatic purposes.

The titles were make in after effects and I made sure to make the title have a nice font that matches the idea and genre of the film, aswel as the colour, I chose yellow as it symbolizes her colour from her cape and mask.

I also added a final information for the movie 'Out November 2nd' as it is a trailer and it makes sense to add that.

The only thing I am missing right now, is the sound, which I will add to make it have a wider effect on the audience.

For my final piece, I included music to enhance the trailer and make it seem more interesting and dramatic.
